Mother warns of insurance nightmare after child suffers brain haemorrhage on holiday

An anguished mother warns the parents who are vigilant when buying travel insurance after a dream vacation ended a “living nightmare” when her 19 -month -old daughter suffered cerebral hemorrhage.

Natasha Sargent, 31, has been forced to raise funds for a private medical flight that costs £ 119,000 to take her daughter Sienna-Rose to the United Kingdom from the Mexican holiday place Cancun after the terrible experience.

The mother of Tres de Croxteth, near Liverpool, said she took out a family insurance using a comparison website, but admitted that due to an “honest error” in her daughter’s medical records, she became invalid.

“I thought I had done it correctly; It was an honest mistake. You never think you would be in this situation, “he said Independent.

Mrs. Sargeant said she was on vacation in the tropical paradise with her partner Liam Millen, 39, and the children Harry, 13, Liam, 11, when the child suddenly collapsed when he played with his brothers.

Sienna-Rose was urgently taken to three different hospitals before doctors gave their surgery to save lives to eliminate part of coagulation. A blood clot remains on the left side of his brain and it is unknown what caused hemorrhage.

The child is currently being treated at the General Hospital of Cancun, where he has been for more than a week and expects a medical flight home. However, without insurance, the family has been left to raise funds to pay the expensive medical invoice.

Now, Mrs. Sargeant warns others to “verify triple” their medical records and make sure the details are “successful” before obtaining medical coverage.

“We took a policy on a comparison website, but she had numerous hospital visits for jaundice and bronchitis when she was a baby and we did not reveal all the dates, so the insurance was not valid,” he said.

Mrs. Sargeant, who works as a medical care assistant, said Sienna-Rose “was completely well” when they flew last week, but five days after the holidays he collapsed and vomited about 50 times in the space of two hours before they could get help.

“We hurry trying to take her to different hospitals. Finally, he had a computerized tomography that revealed that he had a cerebral hemorrhage, ”said Sarkant.

“The doctors said that his brain had swollen and that there were many liquids, so he needed emergency surgery.”

When describing the terrible experience as “horrible,” Mrs. Sargeant said that Sienna-Rose had deteriorated badly after her operation and suffered fevers.

“The first day after the operation, she was fine, I was drinking and we were going to start leaving her again at the food. Then, the next day, she gave a bad shift and has not been the same since then, ”he said.

Only one person can visit Sienna-Rose at the same time, which means that parents have been taking shifts to sit next to their bed, while the other takes care of their son.

However, on one occasion, Mrs. Sargeant was denied entrance to the hospital because she wore “flip flops” and “vacation clothes.”

“They denied me the entrance to the hospital, they said that I first needed to buy some clothes. It was horrible, I was crying and begging them to let me in and saw it, ”he said.

Sienna-Rose, which is not fit to fly commercially, is ready to take a 11-hour flight return to the United Kingdom with an air ambulance on Saturday after Mrs. Sargeant raised almost 150,000 in Gofundme.

LIA’s Wings, a beneficial organization of the United Kingdom that helps organize air ambulance transfers for children, also donated £ 20,000 to the cause and is now helping to coordinate the transfer and supervise the integration of Sienna-Rose to NHS Care.

The beneficial organization said this money will be used to pay the medical flight of £ 119,000 home and pay medical invoices in Mexico.

“When we obtained the appointment, I thought we would have to stay here for a couple of months until it was flying. I thought we would never gather that money, ”Sargeant said.

“It is crucial that we obtain that medical flight because if there were more problems, it could put it in danger. I am nervous because of the flight because anything could happen, ”he added.

A spokesman for the Commonwealth Development and Development Office (FCDO) said: “We are supporting the family of a British citizen in the hospital in Mexico and we are in contact with local authorities.”
