Phoenix (azfamily) – There is a growing concern for state leaders with possible federal expenses of expenses and the impact it could have on the future of Medicaid.
More than two million people in Arizona are registered in Medicaid, known as AHCCCS.
This week, the United States Representatives Chamber approved its budget resolution that included the committees of the House of Representatives that will be ordered to reduce costs. The Energy and Commerce Committee, which supervises Medicaid, has the task of reducing at least $ 880 billion in ten years.
“Medicaid is very problematic because it has a lot of fraud, waste and abuse. Everyone knows. We all know intuitively, ”said House President Mike Johnson.
The Executive Director of the Arizona Public Health Association, Will Humble, says that people who are registered under the expansion of Arizona’s low income could lose their coverage if federal financing falls below a certain level.
“You can’t get $ 800 billion in ten years without chasing Medicaid,” Humble said. “We are seeing about 550,000 people in Arizona who would lose their Medicaid insurance.”
He says that the areas that would see the greatest impact would be rural Arizona and smaller communities.
If that happens, it could cost Arizona’s taxpayers almost $ 1 billion to maintain coverage for all. Humble says it would be possible to find money to pay that, but Governor Hobbs has said that there is no way that the State can finance that.
“These are our tax dollars that we are sending to Washington. They owe us back, ”said Governor Katie Hobbs.
