Hong Kong: Majority of youngsters like to travel but one third don’t buy travel insurance

A new survey in Hong Kong has revealed that 74% of young participants love to travel and explore new places and try new and exciting experiences during their trips, but more than a third of them do not buy travel insurance.

The Blue Cross (Asia-Pacific) survey was carried out to determine the travel and travel preferences of young people, as well as their level of protection and consciousness of risk management and protection.

The survey that was conducted through online questionnaires found that 69% of respondents plan to travel twice or more in the next 12 months and 22% plans to travel three times or more. The survey found that 74% of respondents aspire to explore and try unique, novel and exciting experiences during their trips, and approximately one third (32%) prefers to explore less known destinations.

Answering questions about travel related to travel, 71% of respondents cited delays or flight cancellations as their main concern; Half (50%) of respondents were worried about lost or damaged luggage. However, more than a third (34%) of them lacked protection awareness.

The survey results revealed that two thirds (66%) of respondents would buy travel insurance to protect themselves and their families, of which 80% considered premium and promotional offers as the main factor when choosing the insurance travel. A third (34%) would not acquire insurance, of which 42% considered it unnecessary, demonstrating that the new generation has an inappropriate awareness of its protection needs.

For example, we will introduce more flash sales and collaborate with travel platforms.

Blue Cross Business Data reflects a growing base of younger customers, with a 108% increase in insured 18 to 29 years and an increase of 164% in the number of policies. In addition, the number of insured and policies for age group 18 to 22 increased 150% and 191% respectively.

Blue Cross conducted the survey was conducted during December 2024 and January 2025 and a total of 823 Hong Kong residents of 18 years or more were interviewed to understand travel preferences, habits and awareness of protection of young people.
